The Coloured Horse and Pony

The Coloured Horse and Pony by Edward Hard

This is the first book devoted to the broken-coloured equine in all its shapes and sizes, wheter riding or draught horse, pony or donkey, and will appeal to all enthusiasts.
In the past the piebald or skewbald was frowned upon in fashionable circles, and within several breeds where it once occurred, positive steps were taken against its registration. Despite all these measures, the coloureds have made their mark as children’s ponies, through the competition world, and – traditionally in Britain – as work animals for gypsies and travelling people.
A wide range of views, both historical and modern, are explored here, backed by the latest scientific knowledge on colour genetics. The history of the parti-coloured is documented from earliest times to the present, when breed societies sprang up to further their improvement. Examples of these eye-catching horses and ponies from literature and art are brought together for the first time, and colour in breeds around the world is examined. American Paints and Pintos are compared to the British types, where Thoroughbred and Warmblood influence is increasingly seen, and the Spanish-American terminology which is now becoming widespread is introduced.
