This book describes the foundations of the bred, and its history in the Shetlands where it was traditionally used for carrying peat as well as humans. It charts the historic effects of the Mines Act, which inadvertently influenced the course of the breed, and shows how the tough little ponies adapted to life underground in the mines, their stamina and docile temperaments ideally suited to the rigorous conditions.
